OK – so yes – there’s a rhythm section… but in the main, this is a two man show between Barney Bigard and his clarinet with Arvell Shaw on bass – and Sid Catlett gently contributing some subtle percussion in the background.
And it Swings. Like. Crazy. I cannot listen to this too many times – it is utterly amazing. I’m not sure I’d use it for DJing purposes, but it makes me want to dance like anything.
Recorded at a 1947 concert (which someone has thoughtfully put on YouTube here) – and I first heard this rendition, although from a different concert, on the wonderful Mosaic box set – Columbia and RCA Victor Live Recordings of Louis Armstrong and the All Stars
As you state not a dj session dance, but great toe tapping dance juice inspired sound. Would play at beginning when punters waiting to come in or just prior to main start, I find that time to test a new sound and see what feedback gained.
